Spatially distributed modelling of pesticide leaching at European scale with the PyCatch modelling framework

چکیده
The modelling of pesticide transport through the soil and estimating its leaching to groundwater is essential for an appropriate environmental risk assessment. Pesticide leaching models commonly used in regulatory processes often lack the capability of providing a comprehensive spatial view, as they are implemented as non-spatial point models or only use a few combinations of representative soils to simulate specific plots. Furthermore, their handling of spatial input and output data and interaction with available Geographical Information Systems tools is limited. Therefore, executing several scenarios simulating and assessing the potential leaching on national or continental scale at high resolution is rather inefficient and prohibits the straightforward identification of areas prone to leaching.

Using a linked soil model emulator and unsaturated zone leaching model to account for preferential flow when assessing the spatially distributed risk of pesticide leaching to groundwater in England and Wales.
Although macropore flow is recognized as an important process for the transport of pesticides through a wide range of soils, none of the existing spatially distributed methods for assessing the risk of pesticide leaching to groundwater account for this phenomenon. The present paper presents a spatially distributed modelling system for predicting pesticide losses to groundwater through micro- an...
متن کاملSpatial uncertainty analysis of pesticide leaching using a metamodel of PEARL
Spatially distributed modelling has recently been introduced in pesticide registration procedures and policy evaluations. The assessments are quite demanding with respect to computational efforts, which probably is the reason that little attention has been paid so far to uncertainty analyses of leaching concentrations at the regional scale. Recently, a metamodel of pesticide leaching was develo...
متن کاملA European test of pesticide-leaching models: methodology and major recommendations
Testing of pesticide-leaching models is important in view of their increasing use in pesticide registration procedures in the European Union. This paper presents the methodology and major conclusions of a test of pesticide-leaching models. Twelve models simulating the vertical onedimensional movement of water, solute, heat, and, in particular, pesticides, through the soil pro®le were used by 36...
متن کاملModelling pesticide leaching in a sandy soil with the VARLEACH model
Within this paper the ability of the VARLEACH model to simulate ®eld results is presented. The evaluation was carried out in the framework of a European modelling validation exercise, adopting a standardised modelling protocol. Simulations were performed with and without a calibrated dataset as identi®ed by independent model users. Finally a simulation with a consensus parameter set was made. T...
متن کاملComparing and evaluating pesticide leaching models: results for the Tor Mancina data set (Italy)
This paper describes the results of an evaluation of pesticide leaching modelling, using data collected on four lysimeters in Italy. The experimental data were collected during a 3 year period at Tor Mancina (Rome, Italy), on a clay-loam calcareous soil. Monitored variables are the soil water drainage, the bromide leaching and the metolachlor leaching. Two different irrigation schedules were co...
